Water Safety & Lifeguard Training

Bronze Medallion

The Bronze Medallion course gives an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue: education/judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconcsious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500m timed swim. Prerequisites and further information can be found on the Lifesaving Society of Manitoba Website.

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. It is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. It includes a timed 600m swim. NLS – National Lifeguard Service

National Lifeguard certification is the industry standard for professional lifeguards in Canada. NLS guards are water rescue professionals trained in emergency care. They are trained to spot potential trouble and intervene before it becomes life threatening. NLS guards identify hazards and determine safe practices. They educate the public about the hazards and risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be Water Smart. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Courses

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop fitness activities, water safety and swimming skills. This will certify them to instruct Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.
