History of Friendship Day

Although there is not a lot of information regarding the origins of Friendship Day, the U.S. Congress, in 1935, proclaimed the first Sunday in August as National Friendship Day. Since then, it has become an annual event. In 1997, the U.N. named Winnie-the-Pooh as the Friendship Ambassador for the world. How fitting it is for us to participate in such an event as Winnie-the-Pooh hails from Winnipeg.

In 1994, Grower Direct decided to begin its own celebration of this event. The original concept was for the stores to give out a dozen roses to customers who would keep one rose and give the other 11 away to friends, a person you pass on the street, someone who needs a lift and so on. Since then, most stores have partnered with a local charity to raise funds and awareness for their organization and spread goodwill.

I have chosen Camp Arnes as I have a long history with them, a deep appreciation for the dedicated work they do and a desire to raise awareness of their mission and support them financially and spiritually.

I look forward to and anticipate another great event this year!
